The Vera Rubin Observatory Just Found 11,000 New Asteroids

Named for the astronomer whose work proved dark matter is real, the observatory pairs an 8.4-meter telescope with the world's largest digital camera, a 3.2-gigapixel giant that images the entire southern sky every night to catch anything that moves or brightens. Over ten years it will map dark energy and dark matter, deliver automatic nightly alerts to researchers worldwide, and hunt the near-Earth objects that could one day threaten our planet.
