This past summer, I participated in the World Soundtrack Awards Film 2018 Scoring Competition. The requirement was to write a score for a scene in Isao Takahata's animation "Grave of the Fireflies" which was left music-less in the Studio Ghibili release. I had a blast writing for the competition, utilizing different techniques for a full orchestra. In this sequence, the main characters are caught in the middle of Kobe, Japan, while the United States commence the bombings to End World War II. The music in the sequence is meant to establish the terrifying nature of the circumstances, and then turn into an emotional moment for the characters as they witness the demolishing of their hometown.
