This is the first part of a video series devoted to the exploration of a narrow, volatile-rich pegmatite found within Pikes Peak Batholith, Colorado. The day began with an off-trail hike into an area of Pike National Forest that is historically known as the South Platte Pegmatite District. Remnants of old mine workings in this region were noted, but the areas that garnered my attention were several kilometers away and pertained to the contacts between igneous and metamorphic rock units. Since the quantity of crystals recovered quadruples in part two, we will zoom out then to get a better understanding of the regional geology, topography, and subtle nuances in the granite which led to this discovery.
For now, let’s begin on the local scale where we trace a single quartz crystal (float) to an origin lined with microcline and pastel fluorite crystals. Note to collectors: Even in carefully dissecting a pocket-forming pegmatite, this video shows how beautiful crystals may easily be overlooked. Take your time and enjoy the sanctuary of the forest.
