DeBatto says many U.S. Republicans privately see NATO as important but are too afraid of Trump and his supporters to challenge him publicly on the matter. Speaking of sanctions against Russia, DeBatto dismisses the talk on the subject as mostly empty, saying there’s no real agreement or serious legislative push behind it yet.

He warns that Trump’s plan to massively expand the military budget could come at the expense of other government functions and might even be tied to fears of domestic unrest and martial law. Our guest also says Trump’s withdrawal from international organizations reflects a belief that alliances are useless unless they make immediate financial sense for the U.S.
