For months now, President Donald Trump has courted his “Favourite Field Marshal,” Asim Munir, even at the cost of undermining America’s ties with India. Last week, as the Pakistan Army cracked down on Tehreek Labbaik-e-Pakistan extremists it had long coddled, the reasons became evident. Trump believes the Pakistan Army’s choke-hold on the country can crush jihadism inside the country and neighbouring states like Afghanistan. Past experience, though, shows military authoritarianism is the cause of extremism, not the cure.
