In 2017, a 40 year old Italian fitness trainer named Laura Mesi held a symbolic wedding ceremony where she married herself. The event took place in Italy and included many traditional wedding elements such as a white dress, bridesmaids, a three tier wedding cake, and around 70 guests who came to celebrate with her. The ceremony was not legally recognized, but it represented her personal commitment to self love and independence. The idea came after the end of a twelve year relationship, when Mesi decided she did not want to wait for a partner to define her happiness.
Mesi described the concept as sologamy, a symbolic marriage to oneself that emphasizes self acceptance and personal fulfillment. Explaining her decision, she said, “You can have a fairytale even without the prince.” She also stated, “I firmly believe that each of us must first of all love ourselves.” Although she celebrated the ceremony as a milestone in her life, Mesi also said she remains open to finding a partner in the future, adding that her happiness does not depend on a relationship.
