Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) was a pivotal musical figure of the 19th-century, combining a deep reverence for the contrapuntal traditions of J.S. Bach with a distinctly romantic melodic sensibility. His Andante in D major (MWV W 32), often titled Andante con variazioni, was composed in July 1844 during one of the composer’s frequent visits to London and dates from the same fertile period in which Mendelssohn was preparing his seminal Six Organ Sonatas, Op. 65. Although it was not included in that set and remained unpublished until 1904, it stands as one of his most polished and charming standalone works for the instrument.
This performance is given on the Sonnenorgel in the Church of St Peter and Paul in Görlitz, which was sampled for Hauptwerk by Sonus Paradisi. The instrument, originally built in 1703 by Eugenio Casparini and later restored and expanded, is one of the most significant organs in Germany. Its bright, articulate principal chorus and colourful solo stops provide a clear and flexible sound world that suits Mendelssohn’s contrapuntal writing and classical clarity, while also allowing warmth and breadth in more lyrical passages.
