Brace yourselves for an enchanting winter spectacle as Anna's Hummingbird defies the Canadian cold to visit my feeder! Join me on this captivating journey as we witness the incredible resilience of these tiny wonders during the frosty days in Canada.
🐦 Despite their small size, Anna's Hummingbirds are hardy creatures that face unique challenges during the winter months and it is so important for us to keep them alive during these cold days.
Making nectar for hummingbirds is a simple process, and you can do it with just a few common ingredients. Here's a basic recipe:
Ingredients:
1 cup white granulated sugar
4 cups water
Instructions:
Boil Water: Bring the 4 cups of water to a boil. Boiling helps to remove impurities and ensures the water is safe for hummingbirds.
Add Sugar: Once the water is boiling, add the 1 cup of white granulated sugar to the hot water. Stir until the sugar completely dissolves. Boiling the water first makes it easier for the sugar to dissolve and helps prevent the growth of harmful molds.
Cool: Allow the sugar water solution to cool to room temperature. It's essential to let it cool before filling your hummingbird feeder to avoid any potential harm to the birds.
Fill the Feeder: Pour the cooled sugar water into your hummingbird feeder. Be careful not to overfill, as hummingbirds may not drink all the nectar before it needs to be changed.
Store Unused Nectar: If you have leftover nectar, you can store it in the refrigerator for up to one to two weeks. Make sure to clean and refill your hummingbird feeder regularly, especially in warmer weather, to prevent the growth of mold and to keep the nectar fresh.
Important Tips:
No Red Dye: Do not add red food coloring to the nectar. The red parts of the hummingbird feeder are sufficient to attract the birds, and food coloring may be harmful to them.
Clean the Feeder: Regularly clean your hummingbird feeder with hot water and a mild vinegar solution (1-part vinegar to 4-parts water) to prevent mold and bacterial growth. Rinse thoroughly before refilling with fresh nectar.
Replace Nectar Regularly: In warmer weather, change the nectar every 2-3 days, and in cooler weather, it can last up to a week. Keeping the nectar fresh is essential for the health of the hummingbirds.
By following these simple steps, you'll be providing a safe and nutritious nectar for the hummingbirds that visit your feeder.
