Hanieh had to go to school, and this week, Fatimah was also going to leave for university to continue her studies. Both were on the verge of a new stage in their lives; one with a school bag and childhood dreams, the other with a university suitcase and bigger aspirations. But what they had in common was longing.
Hanieh slowly walked towards Fatimah. Her eyes were shining, but behind that shine, there was a hidden sadness. Fatimah bent down and hugged her; a long and deep hug, as if she wanted to convey all her love to her sister at that moment. Hanieh said: “Take care of yourself… come back soon.” Fatimah smiled, but her voice trembled a little: “You too, be strong, study well. I will always be proud of you.”
At that moment, Abbas said in a calm but firm voice, “Abji, get in the car so we can go, you might be late for school.” Haniyeh looked at Fatimah again, waved goodbye, and got in the car. The car drove out of the yard, and Fatimah looked at them as much as she could.
On the way to school, Abbas tried to calm Haniyeh’s heart. He talked about funny memories, about the good days ahead, and about how distance does not always mean distance between hearts. Haniyeh slowly smiled and her worries lessened. When they reached school, Abbas dropped her off and said, “Whenever you feel like it, think about your goal.” Haniyeh nodded and entered the school. Abbas also returned home.
When he entered the yard, he saw Fatimah taking off her clothes. He asked, “Do you want to go somewhere?”
Fatimah replied, “Yes, I want to go back to university tomorrow. "Some of my clothes are dirty, I need to wash them and get them ready."At that moment, there was a knock on the door. Fatima opened the door and was surprised to see Shakeel. She said, “Why did you come here?”
Shakeel said in a quiet voice, “Yesterday you said you might return to university tomorrow or the day after. I came to see you and say goodbye… and I brought you some money.”
Fatima involuntarily hugged him and thanked him. When Shakeel took the money out of his bag, Abbas, who had heard them, came out of the yard. He asked in surprise, “Why is Shakeel here?”
Fatima replied, “He has business with me, he has come to see me. Please go inside.”
Abbas agreed, and even when their father tried to intervene, he explained that this meeting was to say goodbye and that they should not be disturbed.
After a little heartache, Shakeel gave Fatima some of the money, said goodbye with a heavy heart, and walked back home. Fatima continued her work, even though she was sad. She brought the clothes to wash, but the water was very cold. Abbas said, “Wait, we’ll heat the water.” With each other’s help, they lit a fire, filled the tub with water, and put it on the fire. When the water was hot, Fatima washed her clothes carefully; as if she was washing each piece of clothing with a memory and preparing it for a new chapter in life.
After finishing the work, both of them felt tired but lighter. They went inside and made a delicious omelet for lunch together. They sat together, ate, and talked about memories. The warmth of that simple meal soothed their hearts a little.
That day was full of tears and smiles, goodbyes, and hope; a day that showed that leaving is not always the end, but sometimes the beginning of a new path.
