Sevoflurane - Mechanism, Action & Administration
Main Action:
Sevoflurane is primarily used for general anaesthesia, providing a reversible loss of both awareness and memory of pain (noxious stimuli). It's a go-to choice for smooth and controlled anaesthetic experiences.
Mode of Action:
While the exact mechanism of general anaesthesia isn't fully understood, Sevoflurane likely works by disrupting synaptic transmission, particularly in the ventrobasal thalamus.
It may enhance the effects of GABAA and glycine receptors while antagonizing NMDA receptors. This disruption could involve changes in the hydrophobic regions of neuronal membranes, affecting their function.
Routes of Administration/Dose:
Sevoflurane is administered via inhalation. Its pleasant, non-irritant odour makes it suitable for both induction and maintenance of anaesthesia.
Induction Dose: 5–8% concentration.
Maintenance Dose: Typically maintained between 0.5 and 3%.
