The most important and challenging: just reach start! I walk and talk through my hiking gear for the Waitukubuli National Trail in Dominica, showing that you don't need any fancy advanced gear to do this Caribbean long-distance hike. However, you do need to be prepared and bring some hiking and camping essentials you can't find locally on the island of Dominica. I also share hiking beginner mistakes so you don't bring the same silly backpacking gear items.

I have hiked a couple of long-distance trails over 1-2 weeks and am still learning what hiking gear you really don't need. ;) I'm planning to hike a 900-KM long-distance trail solo this summer (GR11) in Europe with my dog. Stay tuned! I'm currently levelling up my beginner backpacking hiking gear pack and decision-making skills.

You don't need to buy new advanced gear for your ultralight thru-hike. For this multi-day jungle hike, we packed light and resourcefully simply with the things we had. We arrived by sailboat, so we could only bring so much. Some of it, like the tent and backpack, had been bought second-hand 1000s of miles before. Other items were just what we had or found.

What gear should you bring on a two-week thruhike, hiking, and camping? We go through our backpacks to show you what we brought on our tropical jungle hike where we had sunny, rainy, cold and hot days, and what we (mostly me;)) could have left at home on the Waitukubuli National Trail.

I have sailed 4 winters in the Caribbean. This Caribbean hiking trails is THE best way to explore Caribbean Nature & Culture. Dominica is my favourite Caribbean islands. Raw, Wild & Pure.
