I get a lot of people messaging me that they graduated with their Bachelors degree in whatever field and want to pursue their Masters degree. Then they ask me what’s a good graduate school to go to, what the future demand is like for people who have higher education, and if they can get paid more? Although those are all really good questions to consider, another good question to ask yourself is, “Do you really even need a Masters Degree to get into this field?”
I get why they're asking because you might have followed the same route as me. You graduated with a degree in a completely different field (i.e. Chemistry) but want to make the switch into another field (i.e. Engineering) You think that because your Bachelors degree is so unrelated, that you need another degree to prove you’re competent in this new field, so you have no choice but to get a Masters.
In the end, I can’t answer the question for you. You’ll have to figure out whether or not the Masters Degree is worth it based on your own situation. But remember, everyone's situation is different. Some may already have a family to take care of, some are still finding themselves at a late age, or some can just be super smart.
Consider these points before pursuing a Masters:
1) Do you have the money to get the degree?
2) Do you have the time to get the degree?
3) Are you disciplined enough to graduate?
4) Do you understand that you are not guaranteed a higher pay?
5) Do you understand that higher education does not mean you have a higher chance of finding a job?
6) There will be a trade-off in experiences between an online Masters vs an in-person Masters.
