By a wide margin, the United States remains in first place. The US GDP was 2.5 times larger than China's in the same year. But keep in mind that Japan's GDP per capita was still ten times more than China's.
Second place was just one of several achievements for China. For instance, China surpassed the US to become the world's largest auto market in 2009. The country also replaced Germany as the world's top exporter in the same year.
China has the highest foreign currency reserves in the financial world (estimated at close to USD 4,000 billion in early 2014).
