Moira Furnace was constructed in 1804. It used steam-powered blowers to force air into the furnace to smelt iron.
Despite being an innovation in iron-making, the furnace was a commercial failure, closing by 1811, at which point it was converted into housing for miners. As a result of its failure, the furnace survived in its original condition. It is said to be one of the most significant historical iron-making sites in Europe.
The site consists of the main furnace building and restored lime kilns. It has some lovely canal walks, boat trips, a cafe, parking and toilets. The site itself feels very safe to walk around, and there are quieter paths leading from it to places like Hick’s Lodge.
