Chakyar Koothu is a performance art from Kerala, India. It is primarily a type of highly refined monologue where the performer narrates episodes from Hindu epics and stories from the Puranas.

Koothu is an art form in which the stories of Hindu mythology and epics are orally rendered primarily with the support of acting and hand gestures. In the olden days, it was confined to temple premises. Only the members of the Chakyar community performed this art form hence the name Chakyar Koothu. This was performed in temple theatres called Koothambalam.

In Chakyar Koothu the entire story is presented by a single performer. The costumes are that of a court jester. Facial makeup is done with rice powder, turmeric powder and black powder. He wears an ornament in one ear and a betel leaf in the other. An accompanying artist plays the percussion instrument Mizhavu in the background.

The highlights of Chakyar Koothu, is satire, social criticism, humor and related stories or episodes presented during the performance. In the olden days of royalty, the Chakyar had the right to criticize even the King and his acts while performing. The practice was that the audience should listen to the Chakyar and accept his criticisms. Any opposition to comments made by the Chakyar while performing would have led to an end in the performance of the art form on that premises forever.

കേരളത്തിലെ അതിപ്രാചീനമായ ഒരു രംഗകലയാണ് ചാക്യാർക്കൂത്ത്. കൂത്ത് പരമ്പരാഗതമായി ചാക്യാർ സമുദായത്തിലെ അംഗങ്ങളാണ് അവതരിപ്പിക്കുക. അതുകൊണ്ട് ചാക്യാന്മാരുടെ കൂത്ത് എന്ന അർത്ഥത്തിലാണ് ഈ പേർ നിലവിൽ വന്നത്. ഇത് ഒരു ഏകാംഗ കലാരൂപമാണ്.

കോവിഡ് കാലത്ത് പ്രതിസന്ധി നേരിടുന്ന കലാ സമൂഹത്തിന് ഉണർവ്വും കൈത്താങ്ങുമേകാനാണ് മഴമിഴി ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്നത്. ഇതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി കേരളത്തിലെ വിവിധ ജില്ലകളിൽ വൈവിദ്ധ്യമാർന്ന കലാരൂപങ്ങളുടെ ചിത്രീകരണം നടന്നുവരികയാണ്. കേരള സർക്കാരിന്റെ സാംസ്കാരിക കാര്യ വകുപ്പ്, ചലച്ചിത്ര അക്കാദമി, ഫോക്‌ലോർ അക്കാദമി, ലളിതകലാഅക്കാദമി, ഗുരുഗോപിനാഥ് നടനഗ്രാമം, സംഗീത നാടക അക്കാദമി എന്നീ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുടെ സംയുക്താഭിമുഖ്യത്തിൽ കേരള സർക്കാരിന്റെ സാംസ്കാരിക വിനിമയ കേന്ദ്രമായ ഭാരത് ഭവൻ ആണ് മഴമിഴി എന്ന മൾട്ടി മീഡിയ മെഗാ സ്ട്രീമിംഗ് ലോക മലയാളികൾക്കായി ഒരുക്കുന്നത്. ജീവ കാരുണ്യ ദിനമായ ആഗസ്റ്റ് 28 മുതൽ കേരള പിറവി ദിനമായ നവംബർ 1 വരെ 65 ദിവസം നീണ്ടു നിൽക്കുന്ന മെഗാ സ്ട്രീമിങ്ങിലൂടെ 150 ഓളം കലാരൂപങ്ങളിലായി 3500 ഓളം കലാ സംഘങ്ങളുടെ അവതരണങ്ങളാണ് സാംസ്കാരിക വകുപ്പ് ഒരുക്കുന്നത്. മഴമിഴിയുടെ ഓൺലൈൻ മെഗാ സ്ട്രീമിങ്
