Eretta a Diocesi nel 1571, Ripatransone è stata sede vescovile fino a tempi recenti: questa alta dignità ha reso la cittadina un centro ricco di arte e di storia. Il museo è allestito presso l'antica chiesa di Santa Caterina d'Alessandria(...). Tra le opere presenti nella chiesa spiccano un elegante affresco del 1427, proveniente dalla chiesa ripana di Santa Maria della Petrella, raffigurante la Madonna con Bambino tra i santi Pietro e Paolo, dovuto al Maestro di Loreto Aprutino; un affresco raffigurante la Madonna del Soccorso attribuita a Vincenzo Pagani (sec. XVI), un'imponente pala d'altare di Giovan Battista Ragazzini (fine sec. XVI), posta nel lato destro del presbiterio. Degni di particolare menzione sono anche i frammenti di un altare in terracotta invetriata (1531-1532), opera del fiorentino fra Mattia della Robbia, già eretto nell'antica cattedrale di San Benigno e le tavole con i Misteri del Rosario, assegnate tradizionalmente al ripano Ascanio Condivi, discepolo e primo biografo di Michelangelo. Dalla chiesa dei Cappuccini proviene invece la maestosa e scenografica Adorazione della Croce, di recente restituita al pittore baroccesco Girolamo Cialdieri di Urbino (secolo XVII). Al centro della navata troneggia il Banco dei Magistrati, opera in legno scolpito realizzata dall'intagliatore Desiderio Bonfini di Patrignone. Nei locali del vecchio convento si ammirano oggetti di uso liturgico, paramenti e sculture lignee provenienti dalla cattedrale e da altre chiese cittadine. Notevole fra tutte il gruppo di Santa Maria Maddalena sollevata dagli angeli, proveniente dalla chiesa suburbana dei Frati Minori Osservanti, dalla quale fu rimossa agli inizi dell'Ottocento. È opera di singolare fascino, uscita verosimilmente nella seconda metà del secolo XV dalla bottega di artisti dell'Italia nord-orientale. La santa vi è raffigurata in piedi a mani giunte, ricoperta da una ricchissima capigliatura dorata che le scende fino alle caviglie. La finezza dell'intaglio e la cura affidata alle parti dipinte, nonché la singolare iconografia, più frequente in opere pittoriche che in opere di scultura, ne fanno un lavoro di rara bellezza. Notevole per la luce ed il colore il dipinto Simone de Magistris (Caldarola 1538-1581ca) raffigurante la Madonna con il Bambino e i santi Pietro, Giovanni Battista, Rocco e Antonio da Padova (olio su tela di ,1579)

Founded in 1571, the Diocese of Ripatransone was the Episcopal seat until recently. This high honor made the city a rich art and history center. The museum is located at the ancient church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria (...) Among the works present in the church is an elegant fresco from 1427 originating from the Ripan church Santa Maria della Petrella depicting the Madonna with Child among saints Peter and Paul, attributed to the Maestro of Loreto Aprutino. Moreover, there is a fresco depicting the Madonna del Soccorso attributed to Vincenzo Pagani (XVI century), and an imposing altarpiece by Giovan Battista Ragazzini (late XVI century) placed on the right side of the presbytery. Worthy of particular mention are also the fragments of an altar in terracotta in glass (1531-1532), a work by the Florentine brother Mattia della Robbia, that had been erected in the ancient cathedral of San Benigno, and tables with the Mysteries of the Rosary, traditionally assigned to the Ripan Ascanio Condivi, disciple and first biographer of Michelangelo.
From the church of the Capuchins comes the majestic and scenographic Adoration of the Cross, recently restored by the painter from the Barocci school Girolamo Cialdieri of Urbino (XVII century). At the center of the nave towers the Banco dei Magistrati, a work done in sculpted wood created by the carver Desiderio Bonfini of Patrignone. In the areas of the old convent there are liturgical objects, vestments and wooden sculptures originating from the cathedral and from other city churches. Noteworthy among the group is the Saint Mary Magdalene raised up by angels originating from the suburban church of the Frati Minori Osservanti whence it was removed at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
The work is uniquely fascinating, having been produced during the second half of the XV century by a workshop of northeastern Italian artists. The saint is depicted standing with hands joined, covered by a very rich head of golden hair that falls down to her ankles. The fineness of the carving and the care taken in the painted parts, as well as the unique iconography, more frequent in paintings than in sculptures, make this work a rare beauty.
