Der Monte Baldo über dem Ostufer des Gardasees hat außer seinen geologischen und botanischen Besonderheiten vor allem eines zu bieten: eine großartige Aussicht über den 2000 m tiefer liegenden Gardasee und auf die umliegende Bergwelt - das Felsmassiv der Brenta, die vergletscherte Adamello- und Presenagruppe und im Osten die Dolomiten.

Meine Wanderung startete ich im September 2021, als sich die neue Seilbahnstrecke Prada-Costabella noch im Bau befand, inzwischen ist sie fertiggestellt und man kann den Costabella und Rifugio Chierego mühelos per Gondel erreichen – aber einfach kann jeder. Ich wollte ja wandern, und da zu diesem Zeitpunkt die Bahn noch nicht fertiggestellt war, nahm ich die Kraxelei auf den 2.053 m hohen Costabella bei schönstem Wetter und blauen Himmel auf mich.

Erst geht es durch etwas bewaldetes Gebiet, später gut bergauf über offenes Gelände. Immer wieder kreuzt sich der Weg unter den im Bau befindlichen Seilbahnpfeilern hindurch, wobei der Weg nicht gut markiert war und ich hin und wieder einige Querfeldein-Optionen genutzt hatte. Ob die Wegmarkierungen nach Fertigstellung der Bahn jetzt etwas anders verlaufen und deutlicher gekennzeichnet sind, kann ich nicht sagen, es lässt sich aber vermuten.
Das Ziel hat man schon früh beim Hinaufschauen im Blick, jedoch der sichtlich unterschätzte Aufstieg hat es dann doch in sich.

Schließlich gelangt man zur Chierego-Hütte auf 1905 m und steigt das letzte nochmals anstrengende Stück zum Gipfel des Cima Costabella auf. Den fantastischen Blick hat man schon auf fast dem gesamten Weg nach oben, dennoch ist es wie immer ein kleiner Glücksmoment, das Ziel, den Gipfel, erreicht zu haben die fantastische Aussicht in vollen Zügen genießen zu können.
Beim Abstieg heißt es dann doch „Einkehr in die Chierego-Hütte“, um sich für die Anstrengungen des Aufstiegs zu „belohnen“. Der Abstieg erfolgte auf (fast) gleichem Weg wie der Aufstieg.

In addition to its geological and botanical features, Monte Baldo above the eastern shore of Lake Garda has one thing above all to offer: a magnificent view over Lake Garda 2000 m below and of the surrounding mountains - the Brenta massif, the glaciated Adamello and Presena groups and the Dolomites to the east.

I started my hike in September 2021, when the new Prada-Costabella cable car route was still under construction; it has now been completed and you can easily reach Costabella and Rifugio Chierego by cable car - but anyone can do it. I wanted to hike, and as the cable car had not yet been completed at that time, I took on the scramble up the 2,053 m high Costabella in beautiful weather and blue skies.

At first, the trail leads through a somewhat wooded area, later climbing well over open terrain. The path repeatedly crosses under the cable car pillars under construction, although the path was not well marked and I occasionally used some cross-country options. I can't say whether the path markings are slightly different now that the cable car has been completed and are more clearly marked, but I can only assume so.
You can see your destination early on as you look up, but the climb, which is clearly underestimated, is a tough one.
Finally, you reach the Chierego hut at 1905 m and climb the last strenuous section to the summit of Cima Costabella. You already have a fantastic view almost all the way up, but as always it is a small moment of happiness to have reached the summit and to be able to enjoy the fantastic view to the full.
On the descent, it's time to stop off at the Chierego hut to "reward" yourself for the effort of the ascent. The descent follows (almost) the same route as the ascent.
