This video will show how to remove, repair and replace the trunk lock cylinder on a Toyota Corolla. The applicable years are 1998 - 2002, but other years are similar. The lock cylinder gates are made of hard steel and are prone to cracking, making the lock non-functional, so the fix is to remove the failed gates, and they don't really need to be replaced as the lock barrel has eight gates, so the loss of one or two gates does not really reduce the effectiveness of the lock.
The tail light around the lock cylinder needs to be unbolted, then the actuator rod needs to be unclipped from the lock, then the lock barrel clip needs to be removed. The lock cylinder can then be extracted from the trunk lid. The chrome/aluminum bezel on the front of the lock can be pried off with a flathead screwdriver and the barrel can be extracted from lock assembly where any misaligned gates can be identified and removed. This is a fairly fiddly job, but with patience and a clean work surface where you can't lose any parts it is achievable.
