Bleaching events affect Bonaire almost annually, while ecological analyses document reductions of up to 90% in some dominant Caribbean species.
Active since 2012, the Reef Renewal Foundation Bonaire programme cannot reverse the entire decline, but it selects and replants fragments from colonies that have survived bleaching and disease to promote reef resilience. In following this fieldwork, Lorenzo Mittiga documents processes, results and critical issues, integrating advanced monitoring techniques: as shown by vehicle-based standards, the use of underwater scooters (DPVs) allows large areas to be mapped and hundreds of colonies to be monitored in a single dive, accelerating data collection and intervention capacity.
