In this video, psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan explains various aspects of his theory of the small "a." In the 1950s, the small "a" functions as an equivalent for the imaginary reflections of the ego.
In the 1960s, Lacan develops the concept of the "object small a" or "object a" (in French "objet petit a"), which stands for the partial objects towards which desire is oriented. The video also asks how this latter conception relates to Julia Kristeva's theory of the "abject."
