I've encountered many ceiling fans since childhood, but none have made a bigger impact than the 80's 48" DEMC installed in the first floor hall of my grade school. I credit it as the fan that first grew my interest for ceiling fans, as it kept me both entertained & cool at times when I had to spend time in that hall, which deeply saddens me when I read an article about the company going under years ago. There's something about DEMC fans that just clicks on me, and I rarely pass the opportunity to acquire a DEMC fan, because they themselves are already very hard to come by.
So when a fellow fan collector shared an online ad for an old DEMC, my interest peaked. The seller wanted good money for it, but I'd bet anything the price I paid for this fan is lower than the original sticker price of this fan with inflation accounted. This fan has obviously been repainted. This fan was painted brown when the seller acquired it, but he then stripped all that off & gave it this ArtinAir 'Basic48-WSS' style paintjob which I'm not a fan of. I can actually still see remnants of the original paint of this fan, which was your average Communist Ceiling Fan Green.
This fan brought me several surprises, the biggest one being its lack of a capacitor. I immediately concluded that this is a shaded pole motor ceiling fan, which might explain the huge power draw. The 2nd biggest surprise is the blade pitch, which I thought would've been deeper because the SMC H56 that came several years after this fan had way deeper blade pitch. Even so, the airflow pattern is exactly how a curved blade ceiling fan should have, which means I can't feel much air directly underneath the fan, but tons & tons of air all around me. Unlike the 2 56" Krisbow ceiling fans that I have, which blows air in a more straight column. Speaking of, did you notice how modern the blades on this fan look? Yeah, apparently HK manufacturers haven’t changed much of their curved ceiling fan blade design since this fan. Yes DEMC went on to make unique designs for their curved blade models in the 70’s onwards, but SMC stayed the course with this overall design till this day. I mean, when I place my 2010 SMC K56M blade next to this DEMC’s blade, they both share at least 80% of the design, and the 20% difference are the blade pitch, blade arm, and a slight difference in overal width. I’ve also seen pictures of the 36” variant of this Din Wai fan in the internet, and that too share a lot of design on the blades to my SMC K36!
This fan is my very first cast iron motor ceiling fan, and it weighs a literal million tons, something I didn't expect when I purchased it. It's also the first time I've held bakelite since working on my Barber Coleman desk fan. I honestly expected this fan to be all metal, but turns out the lower canopy, speed control housing & knob are bakelite, and I can't wait to have them polished!
