Critical Agrarian Studies - Seminar 08- 20th September 2023
John Berger’s ‘Pig Earth’ is many things: ethnography and anthropology, fiction and nonfiction, history and poetry, marxism and mysticism, a collection of short stories and a profound and provocative intervention into political economy. It is set in the French Alps, and its characters are the last of the French peasantry. In a trans-disciplinary talk, which will attempt to reflect the breadth of Berger’s book as it resonates in rural South Asia, the speakers will reflect on reading ‘Pig Earth’ while living at the Belipola Arboretum in Uva province in 2021-2023, at an intense moment in which overlapped a global pandemic, a national economic and political upheaval, and an ongoing agrarian crisis.
