Sherry Lee Linkon: Against Erasure: Black Women's Deindustrial Imaginaries

Описание: Black lives and communities have been largely erased in narratives of deindustrialization and its effects in the United States, where most public and academic discourse about the economic shifts of the late twentieth century (and its continuing political reverberations) focus on the iconic white industrial worker. In the early twenty-first century, Black women have been pushing back on that erasure, offering plays, fiction, essays, and photographic projects that, as photographer LaToya Ruby Frazier puts it, create a "monument and a museum of workers thoughts.” This varied body of work, reflecting diverse genres and settings, reveals a Black deindustrial imaginary of labor, family, and political resistance.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Sherry Lee Linkon is a Professor of English and American Studies at Georgetown University. Her research focuses on working-class studies and deindustrialization, with an emphasis on representation. Her books include Steeltown USA: Work and Memory in Youngstown (Kansas, 2002), written with John Russo, and The Half-Life of Deindustrialization: Working-Class Writing about Economic Restructuring (Michigan, 2018). She co-directed the Center for Working-Class Studies at Youngstown State University for many years, edited the Working-Class Perspectives blog, and was the founding president of the Working-Class Studies Association.
