The spine is made up of 33 individual bones called vertebrae. The vertebra are numbered and divided into four regions. A typical vertebra consists of a body and a vertebral arch, which has several processes for articular and muscular attachments. Behind the vertebral bodies is located a vertical tunnel, called the spinal canal. The Spinal Canal contains the spinal cord and protects it from injuries.
