In this mini-lesson, we explore a seemingly simple endgame that reveals two essential endgame patterns and one powerful calculation principle that every improving player should master. The position features Black with an extra bishop and passed h-pawn, while White responds with a deceptive g4 pawn push. It looks like an easy win—until you realize that one tempting move leads to a drawing trap. The correct response, Bishop takes g4, works not because of brute force calculation, but because of a positional chunk: the bishop controls the promotion square of the rook pawn, which means Black can win using zugzwang and methodical king maneuvers. If the bishop were the wrong color, the game would be a draw.

The video goes further by showing how human psychology and faulty calculation habits—like confirmation bias and failure to search for opponent resources—lead to the common blunders. Viewers learn to internalize critical endgame ideas such as the rule of the square, overworked pieces, and the importance of anticipating not just your move, but your opponent’s best reply. This lesson is a perfect example of how a single position can train your board vision, pattern recognition, and calculation all at once.
