Описание: The ancient town of Maheshwar in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh state in central India lies on the banks of the river Narmada. It is mentioned in the Mahabharata and Ramayana under its old name, Mahishmati and has been a weaving centre since the 5th century. Today, about 130 weavers associated with the society produce over 100,000 meters of fine fabrics a year. There are 1,700-1,900 looms in Maheshwar some belonging to the Rehwa Society and many to independent weavers as well. Once an exclusive privilege of the royalty, all the three, Maheshwari silk sarees, Maheshwari cotton sarees and Maheshwari silk cotton sarees have now become a preferred choice of every woman.
