I first heard about the Functional Swing Plane from one of Dr. Kwon's research papers. Check out http://www.drkwongolf.info for more information about Dr. Kwon.
The FSP is how the club head can move on a single plane when the club head gets below the hips and beyond impact. The shaft is sometimes on different planes due to the 3D bending of the shaft during the downswing. The hands can also line up and be on the same plane that the club head is at the same time. This is the only time the club swings on a plane; for the rest of the swing, the club moves on a helical trajectory.
