Three children; Evie-Jo, younger brother John-Paul, and their mute friend T-Fish, live happily in the Sulfur river-bottoms of rural Arkansas. The kids make frequent fishing trips into the river that the infamous Boggy Creek feeds into, catching record fish. However, they are told to be wary of a monster living in the swamps and forests, locally called "Big Bay-Ty", whom Evie-Jo and John-Paul's grandfather is adamant was responsible for the death of their father and his son.
Evie-Jo, a Nancy Drew detective fan, opts to mount an expedition to investigate the situation. After briefly sighting the creature however, two men go off into the swamps when the children become aware of an oncoming hurricane. Electing to go and save the adults, the children end up encountering the legendary beast when a hurricane traps them all in the swamps.
