Ahaji canal was originally constructed almost a century back for
providing irrigation to the culturable command area of 6896 hac of
land falling right from Arizal Beeru to Budgam spreading across 102
villages. It was constructed on conventional designs, but with the
passage of time and especially due to floods, it had suffered damage
and almost became defunct as a result of which the canal network
remained in shambles. The government while taking cognizance of
the situation arising out of the near non availability of irrigation
facility decided to take up the project of “Modernisation of Ahji canal”
with the GoI which was subsequently approved by Planning
Commission under AIBP at a cost of 20.51 crore with a matching
state share.
The project as such is not fraught with any problem except the
funding. The balance cost of 2.05 crore which needs to be released
and utilised for closure of the project.
Modernisation of Ahji canal is a major medium scheme to
achieve an annual irrigation potential of 8316 hac (7556 hac during
Kharief and 760 hac during Rabi) after its completion. The main canal
being a gravity canal having source as Sukhnag Nallah at Arizal is in
a Nallah shape. As the title of the project suggest, it envisages

leakage and loss of water and has to retain the existing section. The
same holds good for its two main branches namely “Kati and
Karshan”, where in also the existing section of the Nallah is to be
retained; only weak and vulnerable spots are being treated except
for some obligatory bottle necks to make the portion in consonance
with the available section.
Work of “Modernization of Ahji canal” and its main distributions
was initially taken up in 1996 at a cost of 20.51 crore. The scheme
was originally funded under State Sector upto March, 2005 with an
expenditure of 3.38 crore. The project has been approved by the
Planning Commission, GoI in the year 2008 under AIBP. Against the
total releases of 18.46 crore ( 11.99 crore Central Assistance and
6.47 crore State Share), the expenditure incurred ending
December, 2012 is of the order of 17.53 crore (94 %) with
physical progress also achieved more than 90%. The project is likely
to be get closed by March, 2013.
