Carol of the Bells is based on the Ukrainian folk chant Shchedryk, originally written to celebrate the New Year and the promise of abundance. Leontovych’s setting is built on a repeating four note motif that creates a sense of constant motion and ringing resonance, now instantly associated with the sound of bells.
In this arrangement, layered flute lines pass the iconic motif throughout the choir, building energy and intensity through rhythmic precision and dynamic contrast. The result is both hypnotic and festive, blending ancient folk roots with a bright, contemporary holiday spirit.
