Yves Klein developed his own shade of blue, his International Klein Blue, as a first step towards declaring the sky as a readymade sculpture.
The first time I got to see one of his blue paintings was in 1987 when I got to visit the Pompidou Center in Paris. The pigment was so vivid that it appeared to vibrate and oscillate off the canvas. No reproduction comes close to recreating this effect.
The next time I would get to see original work by Klein was in 2004 at The Schindler House in Los Angeles. This exhibit was mostly of his hand drawn documents depicting architecture that would be built out of air and fire. It was utterly fascinating. The end would be the most brutal beginning.
