China is rumoured to have resumed mass production of Type 052D destroyers after five of them were allegedly spotted being built at the Dalian Shipyard. Foreign media has been touting China's rapid shipbuilding as making the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy "the largest navy in the world," but Chinese analysts have slammed this claim as being propaganda for the "China threat" theory.
According to the Paris-based news outlet Naval News, a recent image making the rounds on social media appeared to show five Type 052D destroyers at the Dalian Shipyard in Liaoning Province, Northeast China, at various levels of completion.
Naval News cited analysts as saying that 25 vessels of the same type are now in service with the PLA Navy, and that in addition to these five, at least one more is being construction at the Jiangnan Changxing Shipyard in Shanghai.
China hasn't formally disclosed its plans to build warships.
It is not surprising if China is in fact building more sophisticated warships, especially given the current unstable state of global security, analysts said. China intends to essentially finish modernising its national defence and armed forces by 2035, including the development of a blue-water navy, to match the country's international status and better defend its interests.
According to Naval News, China's shipbuilding sector launched a record 10 destroyers in 2019 and eight more in 2021 before the most recent round of destroyer construction. With this rate of construction, the PLA Navy "confirms its status as the largest in the world," a position it attained in 2021, according to a Pentagon report.
The Pentagon only counts the vessels' quantity and not quality, or in this case, the displacement of the ships, a Beijing-based military expert who asked to remain anonymous told the Global Times on Tuesday. This overstatement is used to boost the "China threat" hypothesis.
With 11 nuclear-powered super carriers, the US Navy is by far the largest in the entire world. Even in terms of sheer numbers, the US possesses considerably more Arleigh Burke-class destroyers than its Chinese Type 052D counterparts, according to the expert.
The PLA Navy's quick development does, in fact, reflect the capabilities of China's shipbuilding industry, but unlike the US, which uses warships to uphold its global hegemony, China uses the ships to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and development interests in addition to offering public security services to the international community and promoting peace and stability, the expert said.
