Hi Everyone,
I'm getting unusual action from the Bank B (drivers), intake-side tensioner of my 2014 Jeep Cherokee with a Pentastar 3.2.
When rotating my crankshaft by hand, I noticed this slapping sound coming from the tensioner. I was doing other work on the car over three weeks so I wonder if this is just due to the tensioner piston not having oil pressure since the car has been sitting idle that long and the oil drained back to the pan. I [gently] checked the ratchet and it seems to stop the tensioner guide like it's supposed to (and when changing a rocket arm on that cam, I needed to use the special "hook tool" on the pawl in the tensioner to release the ratchet in order to use the tensioner push-back tool to get slack on the chain so it felt like it operated correctly). I'm not sure if this is normal but noticed a bunch of people mention a "rattle" from their Pentastars for 2-4 seconds when starting after being idle overnight. Could this be it? Also, at no point before/during or after does the chain feel loose (e.g. I can't press it down or find undue slack on either supply or return side under the phasers). The sound sure is freaky though.
One other thing to note... with ALL 12 rocker arms removed from that bank and the cams back on and tightened, when I hand crank the crankshaft and the cams rotate, the tensioner doesn't do this. It's only with the rockers on that this happens. So I'm guessing it's related to resistance on cam when cam lobes cycle through the rockers (or could it be resistance from the phasers since they have no oil pressure?)
Thoughts anyone?
