We sat down with one of our favorite people, Kody with Denver and Front Range Weather. We talked about what to do if your home sustained hail damage.
If you have hail damage on your home, it's important to take immediate steps to assess and address the damage to prevent further issues and to start the insurance claim process if necessary. Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to do:
1. *Ensure Safety First*
*Check for Immediate Hazards:* Make sure there are no immediate safety hazards such as broken glass, exposed electrical wires, or structural damage that could cause injury.
*Evacuate if Necessary:* If the damage is severe and the home is not safe to stay in, evacuate to a safer location.
2. *Document the Damage*
*Take Photos and Videos:* Document all visible damage thoroughly with photos and videos from multiple angles. Include date stamps if possible.
*Make a List:* Create a detailed list of damaged items, including the exterior (roof, siding, windows) and interior of your home (furniture, electronics).
3. *Prevent Further Damage*
*Temporary Repairs:* Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage. For example, cover broken windows with plastic or tarps and patch holes in the roof with tarps or plywood. Keep receipts for any materials used as they may be reimbursed by your insurance.
*Mitigate Water Damage:* Use buckets or tarps to catch leaking water and move undamaged items to dry areas.
4. *Contact Your Insurance Company*
*Notify Your Insurer:* Contact your homeowner's insurance company as soon as possible to report the damage and start the claims process.
*Follow Their Instructions:* Follow the instructions provided by your insurance company, which may include providing documentation and scheduling an adjuster visit.
5. *Hire a Professional Inspector*
*Roof Inspection:* Hire a professional roofing contractor to inspect the roof for damage that may not be visible from the ground. Ensure they provide a detailed report with photos.
*Structural Inspection:* If you suspect structural damage, hire a licensed home inspector or structural engineer.
6. *Get Repair Estimates*
*Multiple Quotes:* Obtain repair estimates from multiple reputable contractors to compare costs and ensure fair pricing.
*Check Credentials:* Ensure that contractors are licensed, insured, and have good reviews or references.
7. *File an Insurance Claim*
*Submit Documentation:* Provide your insurance company with all necessary documentation, including photos, videos, lists of damaged items, and repair estimates.
*Work with the Adjuster:* Be present during the insurance adjuster's inspection if possible to point out all damage and provide any additional information.
8. *Review the Insurance Settlement*
*Understand Your Policy:* Review your insurance policy to understand what is covered and the amount of your deductible.
*Negotiate if Necessary:* If the settlement amount is insufficient, you can negotiate with the insurance company or consider hiring a public adjuster to assist with your claim.
9. *Proceed with Repairs*
*Choose a Contractor:* Select a contractor based on estimates and reviews, and schedule the repairs.
*Monitor the Work:* Oversee the repair work to ensure it is done properly and to your satisfaction.
10. *Keep Records*
*Maintain Documentation:* Keep all records, including receipts, correspondence with the insurance company, and contractor agreements for future reference.
By following these steps, you can effectively manage the aftermath of hail damage, ensuring your home is repaired and any insurance claims are handled efficiently.
