In the 1958 film The Gift of Love, Julie (Lauren Bacall), the devoted wife of physicist Bill Beck (Robert Stack), learns she has a heart condition and believes she has little time left. To ensure her husband won't be left alone in her absence, she adopts an orphaned girl named Hitty (Evelyn Rudie). Initially, Bill struggles to connect with Hitty, dismissing her imaginative world. After Julie's death, Bill's grief overwhelms him, and he rejects the joyful presence of the young girl. Hitty, feeling unwanted, runs away in search of her missing mother. When she goes missing during a storm, Bill realizes the depth of his feelings for her and embarks on a desperate search to find her.
