What guitars do you actually need? It's a question i've faced a lot during my, coming up to, 10 years in the music industry as a gigging/session guitarist. So in this video I thought i'd take all that experience and boil it down to the essentials, the guitars you actually need for maximum versatility and those signature tonal characteristics we've heard on countless records.
Chapters:
Intro - 0:00 - 1:45
Fender Stratocaster (S-Type Guitars) - 1:45 - 4:41
Fender Telecaster (T-Type Guitars) - 4:41 - 6:55
Acoustic Guitars and How They Differ - 6:55 - 8:50
Humbuckers - Go Semi-Hollow - 8:50 - 10:45
Outro - 10:45 - 11:25
Playing Clips
Strat Solo (Neck Pickup) - 2:29 - 3:02
Strat (Out of Phase Position 2) - 4:07 - 4:41
Telecaster for Riffs - 6:27 - 6:55
Acoustic Guitar (Picking + Chords) - 7:07 - 7:23
The Fender Stratocaster neck pickup is one my favourites for guitar solos. The roundness of the note with the clarity of that single coil makes it an amazing guitar for lead playing on almost any genre you can think of.
The out of phase strat sounds on positions 2 and 4 are a stratocaster signature, unbeatable. Whether it's Mark Knopfler's clean sound, the jangly delay sounds of U2 and the Edge, or those signature John Mayer clean riffs such as Slow Dancing in a Burning Room. These pickup options just sound like timeless records.
The Telecaster is the partner of the strat. It's less forgiving and has a more direct sound and a faster attack, especially with that bridge pickup and maple fretboard. It's great for single note parts and also has enough clarity and bite to handle those overdriven chord rhythms - Think The Rolling Stones etc.
Everyone needs an acoustic guitar. If you play at home for your own pleasure then having an acoustic that's comfortable to play is the most important thing. A Dreadnought will give you maximum versatility for strumming and fingerpicking. If you're a pro then you might want a couple of options - A Dreadnought for those big open chords and a smaller body acoustic for fingerpicking as smaller body shapes tend to have better midrange and definition for fingerpicking styles.
Rhett Shull did a great video explaining the differences between acoustic guitars so if you're an acoustic player be sure to check that video out:

Finally we all need humbuckers. They provide great contrast to single coils with that fatter, warmer sound. Solid body humbucker guitars such as a Les Paul can sometimes be quite wooly and undefined as the pickups (too my ears) can sometimes be too bass heavy and don't cut through enough. Swapping pickups to something like a PAF can cure this but, for my money, semi-hollowbody humbuckers guitars are the way to go. The hollow body construction adds so much space around the notes and provides a real airyness that I think makes a guitar like a Gibson Es-335 an absolute beast for versatility. You've heard/seen them across almost every genre... and for good reason. So, if you want humbuckers, go semi-hollow.
