Which country has the most gold in the world, and where does India stand on this list?
At number five is Russia, with a gold reserve of 2,335 tonnes.
Next are France and Italy with reserves of 2,436 and 2,451 tonnes respectively.
Germany stands at second place with 3,351 tonnes of gold reserves, and the number one position goes to the USA, which has a massive 8,133 tonnes of gold.
India isn’t near the top of this list because our official gold reserve is around 840 tonnes — placing India at the 8th position globally.
But India ranks number one in a very different category.
That category is household ownership. Indian families together own as much gold as the top 10 central banks in the world.
According to estimates, Indian households possess around 25,000 tonnes of gold, valued at approximately ₹200 lakh crore.
Among them, South Indian families lead the way — they own about 40% of India’s total private gold.
So, in terms of private gold ownership, India stands at number one in the world.
