Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus)
The chicken is a domesticated bird that is one of the most widespread and commonly raised poultry species in the world. Belonging to the Phasianidae family, chickens are believed to have been domesticated over 8,000 years ago from wild jungle fowl native to Southeast Asia. Today, they are found on every continent except Antarctica, serving as a vital source of food and livelihood for billions of people.
Physical Characteristics
Chickens come in a wide variety of breeds, each with its own unique features, including plumage color, size, comb shape, and body structure. Generally, adult chickens have rounded bodies, strong legs for scratching the ground, and a beak adapted for pecking. Male chickens are called roosters (or cocks), while females are called hens. Roosters are usually larger, more colorful, and have more prominent combs and wattles.
Types of Chickens
There are many categories of chickens based on their purpose:
Layer chickens – Bred primarily for egg production. Examples include the Leghorn and ISA Brown.
Broiler chickens – Raised for their meat. These chickens grow rapidly and are usually harvested at 6-8 weeks of age.
Dual-purpose breeds – Suitable for both meat and egg production, such as the Rhode Island Red.
Native or traditional breeds – Like the Indonesian “ayam kampung,” these are raised in free-range systems and are valued for their taste and adaptability to the environment.
Behavior and Intelligence
Chickens are social animals that live in flocks with a clear social hierarchy, often referred to as the “pecking order.” They communicate through a wide range of vocalizations, including calls to alert others of predators, clucking to call chicks, and crowing by roosters to establish territory.
They are more intelligent than commonly believed. Studies show chickens can recognize over 100 individual faces (human and chicken), experience empathy, and exhibit complex behaviors like problem-solving and memory.
Reproduction
Hens lay eggs regardless of whether they have been fertilized by a rooster. A fertilized egg can hatch into a chick after about 21 days of incubation. Some hens display strong maternal instincts and will brood their eggs and care for their chicks.
Diet
Chickens are omnivores. In the wild or in free-range environments, they scratch the ground to find seeds, insects, worms, and small animals. In commercial settings, they are typically fed a formulated diet containing grains, proteins, vitamins, and minerals.
Economic and Cultural Importance
Chickens play a major role in global agriculture. Chicken meat and eggs are among the most affordable and widely consumed sources of animal protein. In many developing countries, backyard poultry farming contributes significantly to household food security and income.
Culturally, chickens are present in various traditions, rituals, and symbols. In some societies, roosters represent courage and vigilance, while in others, they are used in traditional medicine or religious ceremonies.
Animal Welfare and Farming Practices
Modern poultry farming has raised concerns about animal welfare, especially in large-scale commercial operations where chickens may be kept in confined spaces. As a result, there is growing interest in organic, free-range, and pasture-raised systems that prioritize animal health and environmental sustainability.
