Shelby County Jail Project

Описание: The video that you are watching was prepared to provide factual information about the two ½ cent sales tax proposals that are appearing on the ballot for the April 4, 2023 election. The action to place these two propositions on the ballot was unanimously approved at a regular meeting held on December 19, 2022.

The current jail and 911 Dispatch are located in the basement of the Courthouse along with the public restrooms. This congestion hampers the efficiency of all operations. The plumbing, heating, air conditioning systems and other equipment are well beyond their useful lives. The Shelby County Jail has been at the end of its serviceable life for many years and it is not financially feasible to attempt to correct these deficiencies.

When we have to shut down the Shelby County Jail and it will happen, we will lose several jobs in Shelby County and it will cost the taxpayers well over $200,000 a year to house Shelby County inmates in other counties. This does not include transportation, wear and tear on vehicles or the time a Deputy is out of the county and unavailable to serve and protect our community.

There will be open meetings for all interested members of the community at the following dates and locations:
· March 9, 6:30p.m., at the County Courthouse in Shelbyville. A tour of the jail will follow for all interested.
· March 16, 6:30p.m., at the Shelbina United Methodist Fellowship Hall.
· March 21, 6:30p.m., at the Clarence City Hall.
