in this Lesson:
The atmosphere is a medium for multiple chemical reactions, which affect the quality of
air, climate change and the health of human and other living organisms, such as the reactions of ozone formation under the effect of ultraviolet rays and oxidation of some gases in the atmospheric air.

Ultraviolet rays
Ultraviolet rays from of the electromagnetic spectrum types and they are invisible rays that
propagate in space (vacuum) with high energy and wavelengths shorter than those of visible light.

Their absorption in the atmosphere:
Ultraviolet rays (part of the electromagnetic spectrum) whose wavelengths are shorter
than 240 nm are absorbed by nitrogen molecules N2, atomic oxygen O and oxygen
molecules O2 (to form ozone gas).
Ultraviolet rays of wavelengths range from 240 nm to 310 nm are absorbed by the ozone
found in stratosphere layer.

Usage:
Ultraviolet rays that can be produced by special lamps are used in:


Ozone layer depletion
It is the gradual deterioration of the Protective ozone layer in the atmosphere.

► Its causes This deterioration occurs mainly as a result of releasing chemical compounds containing chlorine and bromine, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that are produced from industrial activities.
► Its effects As a result of ozone layer depletion a large amount of harmful ultraviolet rays (UV) may reach the Earth's surface and from the effects of ultraviolet rays on the human health:


► Reducing the ozone layer depletion
Ozone layer depletion represents a major environmental issue, therefore it is necessary to
follow simple actions or practices that reduce the emissions of harmful chemical substances,
including:
