Ed introduces his "next level leader" framework using the analogy of a five-tool baseball player -- someone who brings excellence across multiple dimensions. Like Willie Mays or Mike Trout, great leaders don't become great overnight. The goal isn't to go from a 4 to a 9. The goal is to go from a 4 to a 5. That's next level leadership in real ministry.

GOD-DEPENDENCE -- Ed opens with the one he admits is his own weakest point: prioritizing prayer over planning. If you're more comfortable building strategies than building a prayer life, this one's for you.

SELF-AWARENESS -- Bart calls this the single most glaring leadership gap he sees in pastors today. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses -- and being honest about both -- is the foundation of everything else. Ed's challenge: identify 3 things you can capitalize on, and 2-3 things you need to neutralize or delegate around.

RELATIONAL COMPETENCE -- Small churches live and die by relationships. The pastor who can build trust, navigate tension, and read the room will always outperform the pastor who can only manage tasks.

VISION AND COMMUNICATION -- Next level leaders can articulate not just where the church is going, but why it matters. This is the difference between management (telling people what, how, and when) and true leadership (guiding people toward a vision they own).

BEING AN IMPLEMENTER -- This generates the most heat in the conversation. The inability to turn a great idea into an executed plan is the most common and costly leadership gap Bart sees. Ed's insight: if implementation isn't your wiring, stop forcing it -- find the implementer on your team and empower them. You may already have that person. You're just not looking for them.

GENEROSITY AND STEWARDSHIP CULTURE -- Growing your church's financial health isn't magic. It's culture-building: preaching on biblical generosity, discipling new believers toward stewardship, and offering tools like Financial Peace University. No pixie dust -- just the right steps taken consistently.
