The first Sukta of Rig Veda is specially important for it gives several key concepts in the text. The method of rishis is to describe the spiritual vision they have experienced by use symbols and this sukta is a fine example. Yajna is a spiritual journey and Agni is a guide, guru and God.
Veda is a highly philosophical text and according to Yaska each verse in Veda Samhita has got eight levels of meaning. The physical meaning for doing external yajna (Sayana Bhasya is meant for this purpose) is the lowest level understanding of Veda.
This mantra helps to develop will-power.
