Ground Cherry or Husk Cherry

Planted the seeds in Feb and March of 2014 indoors and transplanted them to the garden April, May, June and video progress of the plants growth to Oct. 2014.
I am very glad that I tried them and will be growing them again next year. They have a very light kind of pineapple taste when eaten raw, when cooked you can smell an almost caramel like smell. They did not need any special care. I made pie, jelly, sauces and put them in my BBQ sauce and in my Salsa, and I dehydrated them. I'll make videos next year of the recipes.

Aunt Molly's Ground Cherry - Heirloom variety of a Pensylvania Dutch favorite. Trouble-free plant is related to tomatillo. The fruits are also enclosed in little patter "lanterns". Ground cherries are used like berries for desserts, pies and preserves. The only fruit you can grow from seed in your vegetable garden that will produce fruits the same year you plant them. These are golden and about 3/4" in size. Fruit will store 3-4 weeks in the husk.

Ground cherries produce up to 300 fruits per plant and bear nonstop until frost. Four to six plants are sufficient for the average-sized family. Simply gather them up after they drop and keep them at room temperature in a basket without removing their husks. In a week or less, their color will deepen from light yellow to the warm apricot gold that signals ripeness. Store ground cherries in their husks. They will stay fresh for up to three months if placed in a mesh bag and kept in a cool place (50°F).

The ground cherry is a member of the nightshade family, solanacea, which includes tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplant. The immature plants contain solanine, a toxic substance that should not be eaten.
This fruit has the same healthful properties as tomatoes; low in calories but high in nutrients including vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, especially those associated with the color orange. Its vitamin A, C and niacin content rank it among the most nutrient dense for fruit with these nutrients. One ounce has approximately 16 calories and 0.5 grams of protein. Based on a 2000-calorie diet, the RDA for vitamin A provided is 4%, vitamin C, 5% and niacin, 4%.
Native Americans as well as the American pioneers included ground cherries in their diets. The Chinese used them as a remedy for sore throats, coughs, fevers and abscesses.
