Exploring the hiking trails of the Falling Waters Nature Preserve in Glasgo - Saugerties, NY affords visitors an exciting and varied terrain and a diverse ecosystem. Managed by Scenic Hudson, the preserve lies within a private historic property owned by a Dominican society.
Originally the site of an enormous commercial icehouse which burned in 1915, nothing remains of the original structures aside from a few brick and concrete foundation blocks.
We began exploring along the red-blazed "High Trail" which travels beside old farmland and meadows, eventually turning east towards the Hudson river along a woodland trail.
After passing a beautiful cascading waterfall which lends itself to the name of the preserve, visitors will enjoy a fun white-blazed mile-long riverside jaunt leading to several picturesque outlets to the river.
Continuing to the blue-blazed trail will afford many more opportunities to enjoy the river views as well as a widely diverse wildflower community.
Stay on the paths: species encountered included Stinging Nettle, Wood Nettle, poison ivy, Bloodroot, Yellow Flag, Jewelweed, Star of Bethlehem, St. Johns Wort, Bittersweet, and others.
