This is based on the story All The Bright Places — the story of Finch and Violet, two people finding each other at the worst and most beautiful moments of their lives. One of them fighting something the other couldn't see. Both of them loving as hard as they knew how.
This song doesn't try to explain what happened to Finch. It just tries to sit next to him. And next to Violet. And next to everyone who has ever watched someone they love slowly become unreachable and not known what to do with their hands.
Some people feel the world so completely that existing in it becomes unbearable. That isn't weakness. It isn't something that could have been loved away. And the people left behind have to learn to carry that — the love and the loss and the not knowing, all tangled together into something that never fully comes undone.
