President Donald Trump has said his administration is planning to “de-escalate a little bit” in Minnesota following the second fatal shooting of a US citizen by federal immigration officers.

The latest incident involves Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse at a veterans’ hospital, who was killed during a stop by border agents. His death comes just two weeks after Renee Good was fatally shot by an immigration officer in early January.

The shootings have sparked mass protests, nationwide outrage, and bipartisan criticism, forcing the Trump administration to pull the leader of its Minnesota immigration operation. The Department of Homeland Security has now deployed border czar Tom Homan to take charge of the situation.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claims agents acted in self-defence, while local authorities and eyewitnesses dispute that account, saying Pretti was unarmed at the time he was shot. Lawmakers from both parties are now calling for a transparent federal investigation, as a judge blocks DHS from altering evidence.
