Thousands of dead fish are washing up along the shores of the Mystic River in Everett.
Experts told the Globe that similar massive fish die offs have happened at least twice in the last few years.
The fish, known as pogies, often travel in large schools and it's likely they were chased into the Mystic river by a predator, experts said.

According to Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, natural fish kills are generally the result of low oxygen levels, fish diseases, or spawning stress. Depletion of dissolved oxygen is one of the most common causes of natural fish kills. Water holds less dissolved oxygen at higher temperatures; in shallow, weedy ponds oxygen can be especially low as plants consume oxygen at night.
Neighbors are complaining about the stench.
