Lonar Lake in Maharashtra is facing a rise in water levels, caused by human activities such as borewells and percolation dams, and accelerated by heavy rainfall in 2025. This threatens the lake’s delicate pH balance, endangering unique species adapted to extreme conditions. Additionally, the rising waters have submerged ancient temples, including the Kamalja Devi Temple, raising cultural concerns. Urgent measures are needed to address the ecological and cultural impacts on this global geo-heritage site.
