In this video, Olimpia from Typevolution and I discuss Carl Jung's theory of the personal and collective unconscious, where many in the modern psychology circle know by the quote, "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it'll direct your life and you'll call it fate." This quote suggests that unacknowledged patterns and past experiences in our unconscious mind often influence behavior and circumstances, making us believe it is "destiny". However, by bringing these unconscious drives and aspects of our personalities into our awareness, we gain the power to understand and change them, rather than being controlled by them.
The personal unconscious is commonly defined as a layer of the psyche that contains personal materials such as forgotten memories, repressed thoughts, and disowned parts of the self that are not easily accessible to the conscious self. The collective unconscious is commonly defined as a theoretical layer of the psyche containing universal, ancestrally inherited patterns of thought and imagery called archetypes that are shared across cultures and time. It's estimated that 70% of our psyche is actually unconscious (and therefore responsible for creating much of our reality).
Olimpia and I also talk about our shadow that makes up a substantial part of our unconscious, containing repressed emotions, desires, perceived negative traits of ourselves that we have disowned, and also hidden positive qualities that we may have lost due to conditioning. Uncovering our shadow and integrating it is part of the individuation process that Carl Jung suggested could bring us back to our unique, authentic selves. Finally, we touch on famous films and books that discuss these concepts effectively.
