Baba Budha Ji (1506–1631) was a premier Sikh saint who served the first six Sikh Gurus, living for over 125 years. Originally named Bura, he was blessed by Guru Nanak Dev Ji for his mature wisdom. He was the first head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib and anointed five Gurus.
Key Historical Details
Early Life & Meeting Guru Nanak: Born in 1506 in Katthu Nangal to Bhai Suggha and Mai Gauran, Bura met Guru Nanak as a boy while grazing cattle. He questioned the Guru about life and death, leading the Guru to call him "Buddha" (wise elder).
Service to the Gurus: He served under Guru Nanak, Guru Angad, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan Dev, and Guru Hargobind.
First Granthi: In 1604, Guru Arjan Dev Ji appointed him as the first head Granthi (custodian) of the Adi Granth in the Golden Temple.
Role in Succession: He had the privilege of applying the ceremonial tilak (coronation mark) to five Gurus, from Guru Angad to Guru Hargobind.
Blessing to Mata Ganga: Baba Buddha Ji blessed Mata Ganga, wife of Guru Arjan Dev, that she would have a son (the future Guru Hargobind) who would be a great warrior.
Passing: He passed away in 1631 at Jhanda Ramdas, and his last rites were performed by the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind.
Legacy
Gurdwara Bir Baba Budha Sahib: Located near Amritsar, this is the site where he spent much of his life, specifically the area known as "Bir".
He is considered a foundational figure who bridged the early, establishing period of Sikhism with its later, more militarized era under Guru Hargobind.
